Anchor Bolt Protection (The Insillator)
The INSILLATOR is ANCO's answer to anchor bolt protection to address today's new standards. The INSILLATOR features:
- Insulation from ACQ and CA sill plate contact
- No galvanic corrosion
- Lower cost
- Residential, commercial or industrial use
The big "Question" in residential construction to is "What do we do about the corrosion of anchor bolts when the new ACQ or CA treated lumber is used as sill plates"?
ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) and CA (Copper Azole) have 6 times more copper than the CCA that the EPA has banned for residential use. The problem is galvanic corrosion which occurs when dissimilar metals come into contact with each other and an electrolyte, such as water. The international fastener market as a whole has recommended hot dipped galvanizing as the standard. Yet, zinc, as well as low carbon steel, are dissimilar metals to copper.
The fastener specification for galvanized coatings is ASTM A-153. Due to the nuts and other factors, there is no such thing as double or triple dipped galvanizing for anchor bolts. The terms came for the heavier coatings in that flat rolled steel products under ASTM A-653. A G-90 minimum coating was used with CCA and a G-185 is being used with the ACQ and CA. The least affected material would be stainless steel, but it's too costly for use in residential construction.
The INSILLATOR is ANCO's new plastic anchor bolt protector. The anchor bolt is insulated from contact with the ACQ (or CA) sill plate, thus eliminating the possibility of galvanic corrosion. The cost of the INSILLATOR is less than the additional cost of galvanizing.

Not all Anchor Bolts are Anchor Bolts!
There are a few things people need to watch out for in imported and even some domestic manufactured bolts. For instance, light pole bolts typically have a steel requirement that the Chinese and other imports don’t supply. Bolt specification requirements are 55,000 PSI steel and imports are typically only 36,000 PSI. That’s a huge difference when it comes to wind load capacity.
Know before you buy. Not all vendors supply the full requirement you might need.
